Abstract

This paper aims to provide an overview of Content and Language Integrated Learning over recent decades. We will focus on its origins as well as on the European initiatives prior to the implementation of CLIL programmes. Different features and modalities existing in CLIL will be discussed and the present situation in Spain will be tackled. Finally, current empirical research on CLIL will be offered in order to shed some light on the improvement of teaching methods in CLIL classrooms.
